In January of 1988, Dr. David Swanekamp opened his chiropractic practice in Robbinsville New Jersey. The office was small, located in a 2-story cape cod-style home at the intersection of Route 130 and Allentown Road. Initially, the office was equipped with three treatment rooms, an X-ray machine, and waiting and reception areas. Over the next decade, as the practice grew, Dr. Swanekamp expanded to a larger space in the Foxmoor Shopping Center in 1999. He later expanded again to accommodate massage therapy, acupuncture, and physical therapy services – all conveniently located under one roof. His vision was for patients to be able to access all modalities in a single office to address complex and chronic conditions. Today, Washington Wellness Center occupies 3,000 square feet of office space, featuring 10 treatment rooms, a welcoming reception area, and dedicated spaces for therapies and exercise instruction.
Dr Swanekamp’s journey in healthcare began as a patient of a chiropractor in Hamilton NJ named John Gerath. Following a neck injury as a teenager, he experienced daily headaches that significantly impacted his academic and sports routine in high school. On a relative’s recommendation, he sought chiropractic care from Dr. John Gerath and saw immediate improvement in his headaches. After graduating from the Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, Dr. Swanekamp went on to earn his undergraduate degree Magna Cum Laude from Duke University in Durham, NC and later obtained his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) in Old Brookville, NY. It is here that he was inducted into the Phi Chi Omega International Scholastic Honor Society. During his internship at the NYCC Outpatient Clinic in Glen Head, NY, Dr. Swanekamp served as the Assistant Clinic Director, mentoring fellow interns and associates. After successfully passing rigorous national and state examinations, Dr. Swanekamp earned licensure in New York and New Jersey in 1987. He began his career working with Dr. Michael Mastoris in Hightstown, NJ, before establishing his practice in Robbinsville in January 1988.
Throughout his three-decade-plus career, Dr. Swanekamp has remained committed to advancing his clinical knowledge and skills. He has completed extensive post-graduate training in the diagnosis and treatment of lumbar and cervical disc disorders. He studied under Dr. James Cox of Fort Wayne, IN to advance his knowledge of disc disorders and effective non-surgical treatment. Additionally, he has expanded his knowledge of myofascial pain syndromes by studying under Dr. Michael Schneider at the University of Pittsburgh. With this extensive training, the doctors at Washington Wellness Center are experts in trigger point therapy.
Washington Wellness Center offers cervical and lumbar decompression therapy, which are both highly effective in reducing symptoms from all types of disc conditions. As a result, many patients have avoided spine surgery.
Beyond disc disorders, Washington Wellness Center provides treatments for neck and back pain, headaches, shoulder and hip pain, and sciatic. The practice also specializes in treating sports injuries, serving student-athletes and adults engaged in activities such as running, golf, tennis, hiking, cycling, and more. The center’s team includes two associate chiropractors, Dr. Michael Edenzon, and Dr. Anthony Depativo, along with massage therapists Sandy Varga, Jodie Allegar and Grace Bonnano, and full-time acupuncturist, Dr Steve Rosenthal. Together, the team has decades of experience dedicated to helping patients achieve their health goals.
